The evidence standard homeownerswill start expecting on every project
As consumer expectations rise, the contractors who win work will increasingly be the ones who can show what they did, when they did it and to what standard.
Good evidence is not extra admin for its own sake. It shortens payment cycles, protects you against later claims and makes handover straightforward.
What counts as useful evidence
- Dated photographs taken before, during and after each stage
- Photographs of concealed work before it is covered, with a reference point in frame
- Delivery notes and specifications for key materials
- Building Control notifications, inspection notes and sign-offs
- Written variations, signed or acknowledged by the customer
- Test and commissioning certificates where applicable
The habits that make it painless
Capture evidence at the moment of the work, not at the end of the project. Reconstructing a record later is slow and rarely convincing.
Use one place for the project file so nothing lives only on a phone. Name files with the milestone and date.
Practical tip
Agree the evidence list with the customer at contract stage. If both sides know what will be photographed and recorded at each milestone, nobody is surprised later.
Why project evidence matters
A structured record turns a disputed conversation into a documented fact.
It is also the foundation of independent verification: an assessor can only give a meaningful outcome if the evidence against the agreed criteria is there.
Document the work.
Prove the milestone.
Protect the project.
